Wow, what a ride we’ve all been through here in the Hill Country … one none of us would have chosen.
We’ve really had 2 floods — one from the fierce Guadalupe River and the other, from the outpouring of love and support from people around the world.
So what does it look like now? I recently enjoyed a 4-hour kayak trip down the Guadalupe where I’ve been many times, starting in Center Point (see photos below). I was amazed at how much beauty is still there. While some trees have been damaged or bent, so many others remain, creating a magical canopy of cypress trees. Despite the scars left by the floods, the river still flows with fun rapids and peaceful currents, with the same magical feeling.
Already in 2 ½ months, most of the clean-up has been accomplished and things are amazingly looking close to normal. Our main park in Kerrville where the Guadalupe meanders along the pathway that we all love for walking, biking, skating or just feeding ducks and squirrels out of your hand, is going to be opening again in just a few short weeks – mid October, only 3 ½ months after such devastation. We’re all amazed at how quickly we are able to recover, physically anyway, from all the damage.
The Hill Country remains stunning with its hills, wildflowers, trees and yes, the mighty Guadalupe! Ultimately, it’s the people here who truly make this land beautiful; they are the heart of the Hill Country.
